The second instalment of the Civic Society’s history is now available, covering the years 1973–1977.
During this period, the Society waited more than two years for the outcome of the Public Inquiry into the bypass, despite the Council knowing the result just six months after the Inquiry concluded. Was the Civic Society deliberately kept in the dark? Curiously, the Society’s minutes show little outward frustration at the delay.
This instalment includes the detailed Inquiry report, rumblings of discontent within the Society, and the increasingly frustrating position reached after a further five years.
