Dear All,
Our next open meeting is on Friday 21st October 2022. Our speaker will be Sue Oosthuizen, Professor (Em) of Medieval Archaeology, Cambridge University. Her talk is about The early medieval fenland 400-800. I am looking forward to hearing about the fens before the major land drainage projects of the last four hundred years.
In my last Newsletter, I brought the Market Town Plan for St Ives to your attention. This Wednesday, 5th October the Town Council are holding a Parish Meeting for everyone to hear more about the plan as well as hear some of the comments about it. Note the changed location for the meeting. Details are on the TC’s website at https://www.stivestowncouncil.gov.uk/_UserFiles/Files/_Agendas/149750-PM20221005_-_AGENDA.pdf
Please also note the request to submit your comments in writing and in advance.
Huntingdon District Council’s proposals for the Town, as well as the other market towns in HDC’s area are aimed to bring economic development.
Do you agree that parts of the Town should be developed and other parts left out?
Do you agree with the proposals, some of them, any of them?
This is your chance to influence the development of the Town over the next several years.
I was absent from last year’s AGM and at that time I decided that I would resign from the Committee, and as Chairman. Consequently, the search has been on since then for a replacement Chairman.
Your Committee needs new members so that it can work effectively. For a year now we have not had a Secretary, the work has been shared between the Committee members, Also, whilst Peggy Seamark remains on the Committee I have taken over her work of finding and liaising with our speakers. I have confirmed to the Committee I will not be standing again and consequently the position of Chairman will be vacant. Also Peggy has again told me she will not be standing again.Just as the Town needs a Civic Society, the Society needs members to take an active part in it. This is more, much more, than just paying your subscription once a year. The Committee needs your active support by being willing to do something to help. In time, if you do nothing, hoping that others will do something, the committee will have no option but to close the Society. And that day is closer than you may imagine.
Doing something could be as simple as finding new younger blood to join. Please do whatever you can.
Any member can seek another member to support them in seeking membership of the committee. Indeed you can just suggest to a member they would be a good member of the committee and straightforwardly nominate them, although the nominated person must agree to stand.
Please let me or Basil our Treasurer have your nominations by this Friday 7th October.
Kind regards
David Stewart
Chair: Civic Society of St Ives
