Dear All,
One or two important bits of information here, please read to the end.
Firstly, our next open meeting is on Friday 21st October at 7.30 pm in the Free Church, St Ives. Su Oosthuizen is to visit and her talk is entitled “The early medieval fenland: 400-800”. Sue Oosthuizen is the Emeritus Professor of Medieval Archaeology at the University of Cambridge. She has studied the landscape of the Fens over a number of years
Visitors to our open meetings are very welcome, we request £3 to help us cover our costs.
After the AGM we will hold our Annual General Meeting. At last month’s meeting, I made an appeal to our members to help find volunteers to run the Society. One member has come forward and offered to help with finding our speakers, Peggy Seamark carried out this task for a number of years. Only when her health prevented her from continuing did I realise there is a lot of work in finding and making arrangements with our speakers.
We continue to seek a Secretary and more importantly someone to fill my role of Chair. Without a Chairman or Chairwoman, the Committee of the Society will find it hard to keep the Society running. Your help is now very urgent. Whilst nominations to the Committee are now closed for this AGM members may be co-opted to the committee, so please come forward if you can help.
Finally, I have in two previous Newsletters asked for members to look at Huntingdonshire District Council’s Implementation Master Plan for St Ives and comment to them about the proposals. This topic has generated more interest than any other in the time I have been Chair. If you have not already done so please look at the proposals, and find them at
https://www.huntingdonshire.gov.uk/people-communities/market-towns-programme/draft-masterplans/
There is a questionnaire at the bottom. Alternatively, send them an email at markettowns@huntingdonshire.gov.uk
St Ives Town Council organised an open meeting on the 5th October, this was held at the Ivo Academy and was very well attended. As I and others have reported, St Ives Town Team had organised a meeting for next Tuesday in the Corn Exchange but this was cancelled when the revised, larger, venue for the TC’s meeting was announced.
Kind regards
David Stewart
